Best D2C marketing agencies in UK

Best D2C marketing agencies in UK

If you're looking for a D2C marketing agency in the UK, the first problem you'll run into is that almost everyone offers the same thing. Paid media. SEO. Social media. Email. Content. Strategy. You then try to find other agencies, but they too offer the same thing.

I've worked around ecommerce and D2C businesses for a long time now, long enough to know that the best agency depends heavily on what is going wrong with the business.

A brand with a strong product and a poor Shopify store has a different problem from a brand with a good website but rising customer acquisition costs.

A business struggling to get press needs something different again. And if you've already got customers but very few of them come back, putting more money into Meta probably isn't the first thing I'd do.

So I've looked at the UK D2C agency market from that perspective. There are full-service D2C marketing agencies that can manage several parts of growth under one roof. There are also specialists that are genuinely better suited to particular jobs, whether that's Shopify development, branding and packaging, consumer PR or CRM.

Here are the agencies I'd put on the shortlist.

What should a D2C marketing agency be good at?

D2C marketing isn't simply a case of getting more people onto a website. You need to acquire the right customers, convert them, make the economics work and, ideally, get those customers to buy again.

I've seen brands spend heavily on advertising when the real problem was the website.

I've seen businesses obsess over acquiring new customers while doing very little with the customers they already had. And I've seen brands try to solve a positioning problem by increasing their media spend. Just know that more traffic doesn’t always fix everything.

A good D2C marketing agency should understand how the different parts of the business affect each other.

That includes:

  • Customer acquisition cost and profitability

  • Paid search and paid social

  • SEO and organic visibility

  • Affiliate marketing

  • Ecommerce conversion

  • Product and brand launches

  • Creative production

  • Influencer marketing and PR

  • Customer retention and lifetime value

  • CRM, email and SMS

  • International expansion

  • The relationship between marketing and the wider ecommerce operation

There is another area I'd add to that list now: AI search.

Customers are increasingly using ChatGPT and other AI platforms when researching products and brands. That creates another visibility problem for D2C businesses, because traditional rankings aren't the only way people find products anymore.

It's one reason AEO and GEO have become part of the work we do with D2C brands. But I don't think every agency needs to offer every service. In fact, I'd be wary of an agency that claims to be brilliant at absolutely everything—that’s personally my take.

The best D2C marketing agencies in the UK

The best D2C marketing agencies in the UK

1. CommerceCentric: Best for full-service D2C marketing

Headquarters: London

Best for: D2C brands that want strategy, paid media, affiliate, SEO/AEO, product launches and influencer marketing working together.

Services: D2C strategy, paid and programmatic advertising, affiliate marketing, SEO, GEO/AEO, creative, product launches, influencer marketing, PR, China and international marketing.

CommerceCentric is the agency I'd put at the top of the list for a brand looking for a broader D2C growth partner rather than a single-channel specialist.

A big part of the agency's experience comes from the people behind it. Members of the senior team have held roles within major retail and consumer businesses.

Philip Driver, the Strategy Director, has more than 20 years of D2C experience from senior roles at companies including Canon, EA and Ubisoft. I too bring in more than 20 years of retail and ecommerce experience from businesses including Buy It Direct Group, Game and Ecatering, bringing first-hand experience of working on the client side of D2C and ecommerce.

That experience feeds into the way the agency approaches D2C marketing. Rather than looking at individual channels in isolation, the team works across paid media, affiliate, SEO, AEO/GEO, product launches, creative, PR and international marketing as part of a wider growth strategy.

The agency has worked across a range of D2C and consumer brands. Its case studies include rebuilding Durex's affiliate programme for Reckitt across the UK, France, Germany and Spain, working across affiliate, PPC, social advertising, SEO and digital PR for Ledlenser, supporting Finish with affiliate marketing, and working with Whitby Distillery across paid social and Shopify support.

The breadth of this experience is particularly relevant for brands that need several areas of their D2C marketing to work together, from customer acquisition and organic visibility through to affiliate, product launches and influencer marketing.

CommerceCentric also has dedicated services covering China and international market entry, as well as AEO and GEO, reflecting the changing way customers research products and brands online.

2. We Make Websites: Best for Shopify and Shopify Plus

Headquarters: London

Services: Shopify development, Shopify Plus, ecommerce design, migrations, UX/UI, headless commerce, technical support.

A good marketing campaign can't compensate for a poor ecommerce experience. If the site is slow, difficult to navigate, badly structured on mobile, or can’t even give you a seamless checkout experience, you’re paying to send people into a frustrating problem.

That's why I think a specialist Shopify agency deserves a place on a list of the best D2C agencies in the UK.

We Make Websites focuses on Shopify and Shopify Plus development, including store builds, migrations and ecommerce development. This is a different job from running a D2C marketing strategy. And that's exactly the point. You don't necessarily need another agency managing your advertising. You may need someone who understands the technology your entire ecommerce operation sits on. If your Shopify store is holding back growth, I'd sort that before increasing the media budget.

3. BrandOpus: Best for branding and packaging

Headquarters: London

Services: Brand strategy, brand identity, packaging design, innovation, brand creation and brand guardianship.

I've seen D2C businesses put a huge amount of effort into acquiring traffic while their product presentation looks like an afterthought. That's difficult to fix with advertising. If you're selling a physical product, your packaging is part of the sales process. Your identity is part of the sales process. The way the product looks next to competing products is part of the sales process.

BrandOpus works across brand strategy, identity and packaging, with experience across major consumer brands. That's a useful specialist to have in mind when the problem is bigger than marketing performance.

If the product is good but the brand doesn't communicate why someone should care, getting more people to see it isn't going to solve the problem. Sometimes you need to fix what they're seeing first.

4. CGC Global: Best for consumer PR

Headquarters: London

Services: Consumer PR, communications, content, influencer and talent partnerships, brand campaigns.

PR is another area where I wouldn't automatically choose a general D2C marketing agency. There's a difference between running digital PR as part of a wider marketing strategy and having a dedicated consumer communications team with established media and talent relationships.

CGC Global focuses on consumer and lifestyle communications, with work across areas including beauty, wellness, fashion and lifestyle. For a brand that needs more awareness, press coverage or consumer-facing communications, that can be a very different requirement from paid acquisition. The two can work together, of course. A strong PR campaign can support brand awareness, content, social activity and even search visibility. But if PR is the main problem you're trying to solve, I'd look for a PR agency that spends most of its time doing PR.

CGC Global

5. Underground Ecom: Best for CRM and retention

Services: Klaviyo, email marketing, SMS, CRM, retention marketing and customer lifecycle marketing.

This is one of the areas I think D2C brands overlook. Getting a new customer is expensive. Getting an existing customer to buy again can be a very different proposition. If your acquisition numbers look reasonable but repeat purchase is weak, I'd want to understand what's happening after the first transaction before putting more money into customer acquisition.

Underground Ecom specialises in retention, email, SMS and CRM, with a particular focus on Klaviyo and DTC brands. The agency's positioning is heavily focused on ecommerce retention, and it has been recognised by Klaviyo for its work in the sector. That's a good example of when a specialist can make more sense than a full-service D2C marketing agency. You don't always need more traffic. Sometimes you need to get more value from the traffic and customers you already have.

Agency Main Speciality
CommerceCentric D2C strategy, paid media, affiliate, SEO/AEO, launches
We Make Websites Shopify and Shopify Plus
BrandOpus Branding and packaging
CGC Global Consumer PR and communications
Underground Ecom CRM, email and retention

That's how I'd look at the UK D2C agency market.

Not every agency needs to be compared on the same list of services. A Shopify specialist shouldn't be judged on paid media. A PR agency shouldn't be judged on affiliate marketing. And a CRM agency shouldn't be expected to build your acquisition strategy. The question is what each one is actually good at.

Should you use a full-service D2C agency or a specialist?

I've worked with businesses that needed one agency to manage several areas of marketing. I've also worked with businesses where bringing in a specialist was clearly the better option. There's no universal answer.

If you're an established D2C brand with paid media, SEO, affiliate, PR, and creative all being managed by different suppliers, you can quickly end up spending more time coordinating agencies than actually working on the business.

Someone has to make sure the paid team knows what the CRM team is doing. Someone needs to make sure the SEO strategy matches the product launch calendar. Someone needs to make sure website development hasn't broken tracking. And someone needs to look at the overall numbers rather than just the performance of individual channels.

That's where a full-service D2C marketing agency can be useful. On the other hand, if your marketing operation is already working and your only problem is a Shopify Plus migration, don't hire a full-service agency. Hire the Shopify specialist. If your acquisition is healthy but repeat purchase is poor, look at CRM. If the product looks weak next to competitors, look at branding. If nobody knows your brand exists, look at PR. It sounds obvious, but agencies don't always make it that simple.

How to choose a D2C marketing agency in the UK

Before signing a contract, I'd ask a few straightforward questions.

Do they actually work with D2C brands?

"Experience in ecommerce" is a fairly broad claim.

Ask how many D2C clients they currently have and whether they can show you work from businesses at a similar stage to yours.

Who will actually work on the account?

The person presenting your strategy in the pitch isn't necessarily the person you'll speak to every week. Find out who is responsible for the account, strategy and delivery.

Can they show you real results?

I'd rather see one relevant case study with proper numbers than ten logos on a homepage. Ask what changed. Ask what they did. Ask how long it took. And ask whether the result was revenue, profit, customer acquisition, retention or something else.

Do they understand your numbers?

This is one of the biggest things I'd look for. A D2C agency should understand more than clicks and impressions. Depending on the business, I'd want conversations around:

  • Customer acquisition cost

  • Average order value

  • Conversion rate

  • Customer lifetime value

  • Repeat purchase rate

  • ROAS

  • Contribution margin

  • Payback period

The exact numbers will vary by business. The important thing is that the agency understands how marketing performance connects to the money the business actually makes.

Will they work with your existing suppliers?

This matters more than people think. If you already have a Shopify developer, PR agency, CRM specialist or internal creative team, ask how the new agency will work with them. You don't want five companies all pulling the business in different directions.

Do you keep ownership of your accounts?

Make sure you own the important assets. That includes your advertising accounts, analytics, website, customer data, creative assets and other platforms your marketing depends on. Changing agencies should not mean rebuilding your entire marketing operation from scratch.

What services do D2C marketing agencies offer?

There's no fixed list. Most D2C marketing agencies will specialise in some combination of:

  • D2C marketing strategy

  • Paid advertising

  • SEO

  • Affiliate marketing

  • Social media

  • Influencer marketing

  • Digital PR

  • Creative production

  • Product launches

  • Ecommerce optimisation

  • CRM and retention

  • Email and SMS

  • International marketing

Some agencies offer most of these. Others focus on one or two.

CommerceCentric, for example, currently offers D2C strategy and analytics, paid and programmatic advertising, affiliate marketing, SEO, GEO/AEO, creative services and product launches among its wider service offering.

The important thing isn't how many services appear on the website. It's whether the agency is genuinely good at the services you're paying for.

Are D2C marketing agencies different from ecommerce agencies

Are D2C marketing agencies different from ecommerce agencies?

There is a lot of overlap, but they're not necessarily the same thing. An ecommerce agency may focus heavily on the store itself, including Shopify development, UX, CRO, technology and platform migrations. A D2C marketing agency is more likely to focus on acquiring and retaining customers through marketing channels such as paid media, SEO, affiliate, PR and social. Some agencies do both. Others specialise. If your problem is technical, I'd look for ecommerce expertise. If your problem is customer acquisition or growth, I'd look at D2C marketing agencies. And if you have several problems at once, that's when a broader D2C growth partner can become useful.

What is the best D2C marketing agency in the UK?

There isn't one answer for every business. For a brand looking for a broader D2C growth partner, CommerceCentric is a strong option, particularly where paid media, affiliate, SEO/AEO, product launches and strategy need to work together. For Shopify development, I'd look at a specialist such as We Make Websites. For branding and packaging, BrandOpus is the more relevant option. For consumer PR, CGC Global is worth considering. And for CRM, email and retention, Underground Ecom is the more specialist choice. The right agency is ultimately the one that fits the problem you are trying to solve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques- What is the best D2C marketing agency in the UK?

The best D2C marketing agency depends on what your business needs. CommerceCentric is suited to brands looking for connected D2C strategy, paid media, affiliate, SEO/AEO and product launch support. Other agencies specialise in areas such as Shopify development, branding, consumer PR and CRM.

Ques- How much does a D2C marketing agency cost in the UK?

The cost depends on the services required, the size of the business and the amount of media being managed. A specialist agency handling one channel will normally have a different fee structure from a full-service D2C agency managing several areas. Ask for a clear scope and expected deliverables rather than comparing retainers alone.

Ques- What does a D2C marketing agency do?

A D2C marketing agency helps brands acquire and retain customers through channels such as paid advertising, SEO, affiliate marketing, social media, influencer marketing, PR and ecommerce strategy. The exact services depend on the agency and its area of specialisation.

Ques- Should I use a D2C marketing agency or an ecommerce agency?

It depends on the problem. If your website needs development, migration or technical work, an ecommerce or Shopify specialist may be more appropriate. If you're trying to improve customer acquisition, marketing performance or overall D2C growth, a D2C marketing agency is likely to be a better fit.

Ques- What should I look for in a D2C marketing agency?

Look for genuine D2C experience, relevant case studies, clear reporting and an understanding of commercial metrics such as CAC, ROAS, conversion rate and customer lifetime value. I'd also check who will manage the account and make sure you retain ownership of your key marketing accounts and assets.

Ques- Can a D2C agency manage paid media and SEO?

Yes. Many full-service D2C agencies manage both paid and organic acquisition. The benefit is that the two channels can be considered as part of the same customer acquisition strategy rather than being managed completely separately.

Ques- Do D2C brands need a specialist agency?

Not always. A specialist can be the right choice when there is one clear problem, such as Shopify development, branding, PR or CRM. A broader D2C marketing agency can make more sense when several acquisition and growth channels need to work together.

Ques- Is AEO important for D2C marketing?

AEO is becoming increasingly relevant as customers use AI platforms during product research. D2C brands need to think about how their products, expertise, content and brand information appear in AI-generated answers as well as traditional search results.

Final thoughts

I've never been convinced that the agency with the longest service list is automatically the best agency. D2C businesses are too varied for that. One brand might need a complete acquisition strategy. Another might simply need a better Shopify store. Another might have plenty of traffic but very poor retention. And another might have a great product that nobody knows about. Those businesses shouldn't all hire the same type of agency. If you need several parts of your D2C marketing working together, a full-service D2C marketing agency can make sense. If you have one specific problem, find the specialist who is genuinely good at solving it. That's a much better way to choose a D2C agency than simply picking the company with the biggest logo wall.
